All very valid points, thanks Richard

I have a hope that the increasing popularity of Spain, however, will not simply be at the expense of Rioja, where these wines replace Rioja on the store shelves. If Spain gets recognised around the world as more than 'just' the source of Rioja, then they will hopefully dedicate an increasing total space to it. In that case it is Rioja+ and consumers get increased choice.

If you and keep up the good work of promoting the whole of Spain, we will create more Spanish wine drinkers and not just move consumers from one region to the other.

I think that Rioja is going to struggle to keep its market share as Spanish wines from many other DOs start to catch the attention of consumers. Already on wine store shelves, there are less and less Riojas to be found as stores begin to stock wines from other Spanish DOs. Consumers are realizing that Spain is more than just Rioja. Priorat wines have skyrocketed in popularity and are generally seen as very high quality. Albarino's popularity has exploded. Monastrell from Jumilla, Yecla and Alicante has become more and more popular.

I don't see Spain drastically changing their DO system anytime. Rioja will keep its DOCa but you may seen a few more join that designation as well.
